Sustainability...

I started registering and it asks me if my entry qualifies for the Shell Sustainability award... The material I am using is from a sheep, so it seems highly recycled. But as I am unsure what WOW considers "recycled", I am stuck in my registration process. Any feedback from the WOW team would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi guys - here is the official definition of the Shell Sustainability Award (see page 7 of the Entry Kit):

"This award is for the designer who is concerned about protecting the environment and uses materials that would otherwise be discarded. For the garment to be eligible, at least 85% of the garment must be made from materials that have been recycled."

Unfortunately, although sheep's wool is a sustainable material, it has not been recycled and therefore does not meet the requirements for this Award.

Don't forget also that we ask that 'No perishable materials are used eg plant or animal products (unless properly treated)"

Hope that all helps!

I have to say that it seems incredible to me that a renewable resource is not considered sustainable...in many cases renewable resources are much more sustainable than recycled materials. I am still curious about sheep wool. The sheep has worn it. When it is shorn, would it not make the wool recycled?

Hi

I am wanting to make my entry so that it is also eligible for the sustainability award but was wondering -does fabric, old clothes cut up for fabric etc brought from an opshop constitute as 'materials that would otherwise be discarded' ... or does it actually have to be made from 'rubbish' material?

any help would be really appreciated

thank you

Hi, We are in the same position and using old materials ( bed sheets and the likes, which would be discarded otherwise ) and off cuts from a cloths manufacturer. The off cuts are brand new materials but nothing is big enough to make a whole garment out of it. Would it be eligible?
We too would like to get clarification on this matter.

Thanks
Cheers, Jeanine

Hi,
I might be able to help with the sheep wool confusion, I won the planet award in 2008 for a costume using recycled wools.. Not bragging by any means, just to let you know I went to op shops/recycle centre and found jerseys that had been thrown away, I unpicked them all and reknitted them/felted them and dyed them to give new life to something that could not be worn again. All the jerseys I used had holes, stains, were past use by datetongue sticking out smiley . I found them in free bins, discarded,as items that could not longer be sold, or worn due to faults and age.

Wow do not see sheep wool straight off a sheep as recycled, as the average person would not throw that wool away.It can be spun, sold to wool companies etc, and is the raw material for many products. The fact that the wool is grown for the purpose of garments (in most cases) shows this is not recycled, just a new product not yet used. Much like growing a vegetable. We grow it for a purpose , then take it from the ground to eat it, but wouldn't call that recycled.rather a new vegetable.
I hope that all makes sense!

best of lucksmiling smiley

Hi,

Our garment is made of 100 % stainless steel. Will it eligible for sustainability award? We have used stainless steel which had been discarded, it was melted to get new stainless steel. Stainless steel is non-hazardous and is sustainable in nature, it doesn't corrode, rust or decay. It is environment-friendly. Plz help asap.

Thanks,
Bikramjit Bhowmick.

Hi Bikramjit Bhowmick

If you have used discarded steel and recycled it into another form then this can be entered into the sustainability award. The creation that won this award last year used recycled copper. They were off cuts from radiator manufacturing. If you go to the 'Getting started' section and find the 'paper work' link, there is in-depth information on this garment 'Queen Adelaide'. (Tick the box)

Best of luck

Why is Ted Whittersil in the previous message put hyperlinks into pheromone and backlinks sites? I would not advise linking to these sites.

TEdghhh,
If you are needing clarification about sheeps wool, please read my entry above, it might help. I make most of my entries out of recycled wools.Previous entries have never used wool directly from a sheep, as I don't believe this is recycled yet.

In my opinion, it is classed as a new product, ie wool ready to be spun, knitted, dyed etc.while some may argue that the wool is dirty, matted when cut off the sheep, it is a natural, expected part of the process to make the clean, new wool, the companies spin etc.
However... If you were to recycle the items made out of this sheepswool, such as unravelling a moth eaten jersey once it has been worn for years, then it is classed as recycled as it has already been used and thrown away, usually to rot in a landfill.. . ie jerseys with stains and holes .
The sustainability award to me, reflects peoples use of items that have already been classed as rubbish, people have thrown them out, believing they are no longer of use. This is where people like me get excited rummaging through the free bins at op shops etc tongue sticking out smiley

I hope this helps...
Ingrid????

Hi Norelle - this too is our understanding of the Sustainability Award: reusing materials that would otherwise be thrown away and having no use except as landfill.
